About this object

This is a photograph of the traction engine rally which was held in Gore in the late 1950s. Most of these engines had reached the end of their working lives and were to be scraped shortly after this rally.

While all of these engines were used in Southland, only approximately a dozen traction engines remain in the area today (2018).
