About this object
Portrait of James, Eliza and Robert who are the children of an early gold-miner in the area. Information plaque in the museum of their father reads:
Mr James Woodhouse and Mr Andrew Young, in the company of two other men, were walking from Waitahuna to the Dunstan Goldfields in 1862. When they reached the Teviot Creek, Mr Young volunteered to carry the other men across. Two of the men hurried on their way.
Messrs Woodhouse and Young waited to dry their clothes, and during this time did some panning in the stream. Encouraged by the signs of gold, the decided to go no further, and pegged out a claim.
