Radio, Collier and Beale TransceiverAbout this object
This Collier & Beale 4110 transceiver combined a short wave transmitter and a short wave band receiver with there own power supply all in one unit. It was battery powered and primarily used for ship to shore communications but was also employed to communicate with aircraft, radio stations and lighthouses among many others. Most importantly continuous headphone watches were kept on the International Distress frequencies as well as weather reports and navigational hazards
The operator would receive messages in Morse code through their head set which they would then transcribe by hand into written messages. To transmit a message they would tap out the message on the selected frequency in Morse code. Morse was preferred as a medium for communication as it signal was unaffected by varying atmospheric conditions. Morse code operators were specially trained and were expected to be able to transcribe at least twenty five words a minute.
