About this object
Acetylene Generators were common in rural work sheds up until the 1950s and were favoured for being both portable and independent of a mains power supply.
It used calcium carbide and water to produce the gas acetylene. Consisting of separate compartments, one for water and one for calcium carbide, the water slowly dripped onto the carbide producing a gas which provided a strong white light when ignited.
