Rope, Rope Making Machine
About this object
This is a rope making machine which was used for twisting rope strands. Belonging to Henry Smith, a Scottish migrant, it was probably made to a Scottish croft's design in the Smithy at Edgar France's farm at Benio.
About the Rope Maker:
The rope maker is made from hardwood fence droppers and other workshop scraps available at the time. The swivel hook (rigged at the far end of the rope) was made in the 1960s from an unserviceable water pump shaft and bearing from Henry's 1951 Commer truck. This hook must turn freely while under strain to enable the partly formed rope to unwind against itself, thus forming the configuration we are all familiar with today.
Henry Smith
Born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1906, Henry immigrated to New Zealand in 1926. He worked as a teamster for W.B. (Scotty) Whyte of Blackhills, Otama, then as a farmhand for Edgar France at Benio. In 1938, Henry leased a farm at Terrace Road, Mataura and in 1942 purchased his first farm 'Cromar' at East Chatton. In 1960, Henry purchased a larger farm, near Riversdale, where he remained until 1977 when he retired to Gore.
