About this object

A black and white photograph capturing a scene from the opening of the new bow-arch bridge in Mataura, 1939. In the foreground of the large crowd can be seen reporters making notes as someone out of the frame is speaking, and to the left a policeman keeping an eye on the crowd. In the background the shops along the south side of Bridge St can be seen, along with rows of flags hanging above the crowd.

This solidly-constructed single-span bridge replaced the one-way suspension bridge which had been there since 1868, but could no longer cope with the increasing traffic. The opening was a much-celebrated event, and the Mataura & Districts Historical Society holds an issued invitation (to Mr. A. Bradley & partner), listing the programme of events and the toast list.
