About this object

A black and white portrait of Warrant Officer Ian Gordon Buchanan. After returning from World War Two Ian worked his family's grocers business in Mataura and joined the local RSA being elected to the executive in 1945. Ian’s father, John Buchanan was Mayor of Mataura from 1935 to 1938. The war was a worrying time for John Buchanan and his wife as all three of their sons enlisted: Ian in the Army, Hamish in the Navy and Roy in the Air Force. Ian's brothers also returned safely.
