Photograph [Three Men Panning for Gold]
About this object
A black and white photograph capturing three men as they are panning for gold in a river (possibly one of the central Otago rivers).
One man is possibly identified as William Walter Cargill.
This is a particularly nice photo, as the men look intent on their purpose but happy to be panning, and hopeful of success. The beautiful rock formations in the background form a contrast and give solidity and a timeless quality to the scene. One could easily imagine similar events from 100 years earlier, with only the style of dress changed.
