About this object
A black and white portrait of members of the Balneaves family, on the occasion of the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Andrew and his wife Jane (nee Rankin).
The wedding took place in 1881, so the Golden Wedding Anniversary was celebrated in 1931.
According to the book 'Mataura: City of the Falls' (pg. 61), Andrew Balneaves arrived in Mataura in 1878 (he was originally from Scotland), becoming a prominent member of the town. He first ran a butchery & bakery business before working for John MacGibbon & Sons for 48 years. He became a member of the Mataura Town Board, then a councillor and mayor from 1909 to 1912.
He was an elder in the Mataura Presbyterian Church, and also became a member of several local clubs:
