Photograph [Unidentified Couple, Ferndale]
About this object
A black and white studio portrait of an unidentified couple. This photograph was one of six donated to the Society by former member, June Mawhinney. The common theme is that they are of people from the Ferndale District. The other photographs are linked to the Wassell, Johnston, or Mawhinney families. Please let us know if you can help us identify this couple.
The photographer, Karl Andreas Gerstenkorn, was born in Germany. He arrived in New Zealand in 1888 and later bought a photographic studio from Mr William Douglas of Invercargill in 1891, operating in Esk Street. From accounts in the Southland Times, his work 'was beautiful'. Unfortunately he died after a long illness, in 1906.
