Photograph [Wassell-Johnston Wedding, Ferndale]About this object
A black and white photograph showing the wedding party of the Wassell-Johnston family at Ferndale. The only identified people in the group are the groom George Wassell, the bride Jessie Hastie Johnston, and the man standing to the left of the groom, William Wassell who was possibly the best man.
The wedding notice, in the Otago Witness dated 19 May 1909 (issue 2879, page 51), says:
WASSELL-JOHNSTON. On April 8, 1909, at Ferndale, by the Rev. G. McDonald. George, eldest son of Mr David Wassell, Ferndale, to Jessie Hastie, eldest daughter of the late Walter Johnston, and granddaughter of the the late Robert and Jenet Hastie, Erdoch Farm, Mataura.
This photograph is one of a group of six donated to the Society by former member June Mawhinney, a descendant of the Wassell's. June's mother married a Thomas Mawhinney, who came to NZ from Antrim, Ireland. The Mawhinney's farmed at Ferndale.
We would be very interested in identifying the other people in the photograph.
