Photograph [Mataura Bridge]

About this object

A black and white photograph depicting the concrete (bow-arch) Mataura Bridge which was opened in 1939. The Bridge Hotel can be seen to the right.

Bob Semple (the Minister of Public Works) opened the new Bridge in July 1939. The Mataura Ensign reported:

'Citizens have watched with considerable interest the gradual erection of the maze of beams, trusses, stays and boxing; listened to the steady beat of concrete mixing machines; watched without envy the relays of workmen shovelling and wheeling the heavy concrete-mix and ultimately saw a thing of beauty emerge like a butterfly from its chrysalis when the network of timbering was removed'.
