About this object

Black and white photograph dated 1889 of the original water wheel at Mataura Paper Mill.

The water wheel was positioned at the end of a 300 foot long race blasted out of the Mataura Falls. It was 15 feet in diameter, 12 feet wide and generated 50 horsepower which was capable of driving all the machinery required to produce ten tonnes of paper per week.
