Name/Title

Photograph [Mataura Freezing Workers]

About this object

Undated black and white photograph of solo butchers, other workers and a Judas sheep in the early years of the Mataura Freezing Works. The Mataura Freezing Works opened in April 1893 and remains in operation. It is thought that this photograph dates between 1893 and 1898.

Before the introduction of the chain system, solo butchers killed, skinned and dressed each sheep. The very best could process up to 150 a day. The Works had three (pet) Judas sheep which led the other sheep into the slaughter house. The life of the Judas sheep was always spared.
