Compact Disc [Musical Memories played by Don Neilson & Frank Bellew]

About this object

Compact Disc; titled Musical Memories with a recording of music performed by Don Neilson on piano and Frank Bellew on bass. The CD has 21 recordings of 'old time' music as listed on the image attached to this entry.

Don Neilson was a Mataura identity well known for playing music throughout the District. By 19 Don was playing at dances around Eastern Southland. Don's first band comprised: Jimmy Hill (drums), Barry Gray (saxophone) and Frank Bellew. Don and Frank continued to entertain locally and were joined by Scotty Watson on drums performing as the Star Trekkers.

Years later Don played in another local band with George Duncan (trumpet), Albie Heads (saxophone) and Frank Bellew (bass). Don and Frank played regularly at the Gore R.S.A.'s 'Tin Hat Club'. Don also regularly played at social occasions, weddings, funerals and at local retirement homes. He was Mataura's 'Mr Music' before passing away in August 2017. Don's widow Jean donated this compilation CD to us.
