Photograph [1978 Flood, Sandy Dixon & Son]
About this object
This is one of a series of 40 black and white photographs taken by Keith Henderson which show the impact of the October 1978 flood of the Mataura River on the town of Mataura. Keith was Mayor of Mataura from 1970 to 1983 and was a keen amateur photographer.
The photograph shows Sandy Dixon and his son standing on the intersection of Kana and Argyle Streets, Mataura. The villa in the background was owned by the Brett family in 1978 and was once owned by Archibald Nairn MacGibbon and May MacGibbon who called it Bowmore. We have a postcard in the collection showing how high the flood came through the villa during the 1913 flood (refer MT2013.14.4).
