Butcher's scabbard and belt
About this objectScabbard; butcher's scabbard and belt from the Mataura Freezing Works. We think it dates from the 1940s and is of the type that the last of the solo butchers would have used before the chain system was introduced in Mataura in 1947. This type of scabbard was also used following the introduction of chain mechanisation. They were replaced by plastic scabbards in the late 1950s to comply with new hygiene regulations.
