Photograph [Construction Mataura Arch Bridge]

About this object

A black and white photograph showing the construction of Mataura's concrete arch bridge. Bob Semple (the Minister of Public Works) opened the new Bridge in July 1939. The Mataura Ensign reported:

'Citizens have watched with considerable interest the gradual erection of the maze of beams, trusses, stays and boxing; listened to the steady beat of concrete mixing machines; watched without envy the relays of workmen shovelling and wheeling the heavy concrete-mix and ultimately saw a thing of beauty emerge like a butterfly from its chrysalis when the network of timbering was removed'.
