Paperweight, Mataura Falls
About this object
Paperweight; a round glass dome paperweight with inset photograph of the Mataura Falls and the Mataura Freezing Works as a backdrop. The photograph was taken in 1925 and is from the McConnell album (see MT2012.72.19). The paperweight was presented to Forrest Brown on 8 May 1928 to mark his retirement to Dunedin by the Mataura Presbyterian Women's Mothers' Union.
Forrest Brown was Mayor of Mataura from 1915 to 1917. One of his duties was to formally farewell Mataura's soldiers as they left for World War One. He played a prominent role in Mataura affairs being a J.P. and Honorary Magistrate, an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a Freemason and a member of the Highland Society.
The scene was well chosen because in the 1870s, Forrest's father (and namesake) built a flour mill on the west bank of the Mataura Falls. The flour mill was demolished in 1892 to make way for the Mataura Freezing Works. For more information see page 170 of our book 'Mataura, City of the Falls'.
