Photograph, Romney RamsAbout this object
This is a photograph of six registered romney rams from the well-known Makaroa Stud of Mr. John Ryan at Bayswater/Gladfield property.
About the Rams:
On May 13,1957, six stud Romney Rams were sent from Southland over to England, in a first for New Zealand-bred Romneys. Buyers, Peter Throssell of Boomin in Cornwall and D. Darbyshire of Warwickshire, wanted the rams to improve the bloodline of their own breeding stock back in the United Kingdom. At the time, this purchase was viewed as 'an ironic twist'; since the Romney breed was one that settlers imported from England when establishing farms in New Zealand.
