Watercolour painting of the Union Co. of New Zealand S.S. "ROTOMOHANA" (1727 tons 2000 H.P.). Painted steaming nearby Rangitoto Island in Auckland Harbour.
Built in 1879 for the Union Steamship Company by W Denny & Bros of Dumbarton and designed for the Trans Tasman Passenger run, she was the first vessel to be fitted with bilge keels and the largest mild steel vessel to be built at that time. She was also the first vessel in the cific Region to be fitted with steam steering gear. By 1925 shes was sold to Power and Davis shipbreakers of Melbourne and her hull was stripped out. In 1928 she was towed into Bass Strait and scuttled.
