Large Pacific oyster shell; RM928

Large Pacific oyster shell

About this object

Giant oyster shell found in the mud under Charlie Davenport's oyster lease in the Waikare Inlet by Charlie Davenport, Okiato. Mounted by another oyster farmer, Alec Clifford of Russell. Pacific Oysters first appeared in the Bay in 1975. This oyster was only poking out of the mud a few inches (green-coloured part of the shell) the rest was buried. The oyster meat was not of good quality. The oyster is a filter feeder and it was not in a good position for feeding. Growth rings on the side of the shell show it to be approximately ten years old.
