Painting, 'Vegetation-Mataura Falls, Te Au Nui'

About this object

This painting, from artist Janet de Wagt's series, 'Maruawai, Valley of Water', focuses on the headwaters of the Mataura River to Fortrose where it meets the sea.

Janet was born and raised in mid Canterbury and from the 1980's has been working as a full time artist. Since 1998 she has undertaken a number of artist-in-residence programmes where a special focus of her work has been on the isolated areas of Canterbury and Southland.

Janet's works are undertaken directly in the landscape in all weathers, responding directly to the immediate environment. Janet believes that the 'elemental quality of working outdoors, in sometimes extreme and changeable weather conditions, gives my work an immediacy that could never be captured by working in a studio'.
