About this object

Exercise book; a school exercise book belonging to Fred Sawyer, a pupil at the Thames School of Mines. The book has red marbled covers with a paper label on the front which reads 'The Arcade Exercise Book', and 'Wildman & Arey, Auckland', onto which Sawyer's name is written.

Fred Sawyer went on to become a prominent figure in local mining. The Sawyer Battery is now the only surviving gold field era battery in Thames. This battery, with its Fraser and Tinne machinery, was used through until the mid 20th century.
