About this object

Lamp; an early style carbide lamp.

These lamps, also known as acetylene gas lamps, are simple lamps that produce and burn acetylene. They became widely used in mines after the re-invention of carbide in 1892. However, it is said that many Thames miners continued to use the traditional candle.
