About this object

Map, 'Plan of the Hauraki Gold Field, Thames'; a map depicting the Hauraki Gold Field, Thames, in 1871. Compiled and published by Beere Brothers, who were Goldfields, Mining and Native Land Surveyors, based in Thames. The map is paper which has been mounted on fabric.

Written on the back of the map is:
This map was prepared from the surveys made by the compilers with the object of publication. The most suitable means of reproductions at that date was photography. The only large camera in New Zealand was procured and a negative obtained. A few prints were developed with the photographer's premises with the camera were destroyed by fire. In those days it required about 12 months to import another camera and by that (time) owing to rapid development of the mining area the maps would be largely obsolete and the project was abandoned. At the date (1871) the map was as complete as possible. The draftmanship is the work of my late father Mr George A Beere C E (Civil Engineer). / Presented by A G Beere JP Gisborne 1939.
