About this object

Bible; a hardbound bible with a black leather cover. The spine is embossed with horizontal bands, flowers and spots. The title page is printed with an ornate neoclassical design of a building or memorial with a central 'plaque' which contains the title and publication details. Printed in London in 1668 by John Bill and Christopher Barker. Inscribed on the first frontispiece is 'Ex Libris / Guil. Romaine / Ex [?] Oxon' [i.e. William Romaine]. Below this is a scrolling motif with the central initials 'DV'. Below this is the further inscription 'Henry Govett / The Gift of his affec: / Grandmamma Romaine / April 29 - 1826'.

Henry Govett was the father of Clement Govett, who married Harry Atkinson’s daughter Frances Elizabeth. The couple had four daughters, one of whom was Monica Govett. Monica, who married Rex Brewster in 1920, is well known for her role in the establishment of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth. Henry was the first Archdeacon of Taranaki and second vicar of St Mary's Church, New Plymouth. William Romaine (Junior) was son of William Romaine (Senior), the famous priest and evangelical divine of the Church of England.
