Poem, 'The Marriage Vow'About this object
Poem, 'The Marriage Vow'; a handwritten poem signed by Patty Meredith, at Hoccom, November 2 1861. The poem was not written by Patty Meredith, but appears, for example, in the 'Friends' Intelligencer' magazine, Volume XVI, number 10, 1859, page 156, written by 'M.N.M.' in New York in May, 1840.
Little is known about Allan Kerr Taylor's first wife Martha (Patty) Meredith. It is likely that the two became engaged circa 1861 while Allan was visiting England. Patty’s family lived at Hoccom House, Shropshire. They were married in 1862 and Allan brought her home with him to New Zealand. However, Patty died shortly after, in 1864, following the birth of their second child. This poem, written in her handwriting, might indicate an interest in poetry or the seriousness with which she regarded her marriage and future life. It is one of only a few surviving items at Alberton, including a few books and photographs, which relate or once belonged to Patty.
