About this object
This photo shows the 'new' bridge across the Aparima estuary during the 1950s.
Riverton Aparima's new bridge was first proposed around 1919. After much discussion and delays, repairs were carried out to the old timber bridge to keep it serviceable until a replacement could finally be built. Work did eventually start on the new bridge, which was constructed of reinforced ferrous cement, and (at the time of writing) this bridge is still in use today. The official opening of the bridge was in December of 1930.
The donor of this photograph gifted the museum 13 in total, from his late father's album. The date range of the album was noted as 1948-1962.
