About this object
This photograph likely shows the interior of a foundry, with molten iron coming down in the centre of frame, flowing into long moulds in the sandy floor. These may have been fire bars for the base of steam engine's fire boxes. The photo has been labelled '? Otara Mill' but we believe this is incorrect.
This photograph came to the museum with others relating to the extended Riddell and Phillips families and their descendants. We know that some of them lived in the Catlins area but we do not currently have enough information to link this photo to a specific person or location.
