About this object
A framed photograph of John McKinnon (1838-1932), on what looks like the edge of the Pourakino River. An inscription on the reverse suggests it was donated by Mrs T. McNeil of Riverton.
John McKinnon emigrated from Scotland to Otago in 1859. A successful claim at Nokomai saw John win enough gold to purchase land at Wrights Bush, which he farmed for the rest of his working life. He married Sarah Anne Wood in 1877, they had six children, three sons and three daughters.
John retired to Riverton and passed away in 1932 aged 95. His obituary was published in the Western Star on 9 September 1932 and is available online via Papers Past.
