About this object
The Muirhead family came to Waimatuku in the early 1920s, from the Nokomai/Garston area where they were farming and gold mining. They took up land near where the Waimatuku River joined with the Tunama Stream. This was Harbour Board Endowment land and very wet. Leonard and his father began farming in partnership in 1941.
Leo and his wife Hilda (neé Somerville) were dairy farmers and had a very successful Ayrshire stud (started by his father) and they exhibited in the local A&P shows. Ivanhoe Phar lap was a frequent champion bull. They won many awards, including this 2nd prize ribbon in 1965 for the New Zealand Milk Board 'Market Milk Cow Competition'.
Leo and Hilda had two children, Judith and Lindsay. Leo died in 1970 and the family left the district soon after.
