Bayonet, For 1856/58 Pattern Enfield 2 band short rifle
About this object
A bayonet for a British 1856/1858 Pattern Enfield 2 band short rifle. We have the corresponding rifle in our collection (RI.W2003.2105).
The yataghan fullered blade is 577 mm (23") long. The steel crosspiece has cockscomb and button finial and is engraved with the number '534'. The ricasso bears the knight's helmet mark of the maker Kirschbaum of Solingen, Germany. On the obverse a broad arrow over 'W.D.' indicates that it was made for the British War Department. A crown is also stamped above the inspection marks.
The hilt has a black, pressed leather checkered grip. The bayonet attaches to the rifle by fitting the muzzle-ring over the barrel muzzle and fastening it to a lug on the barrel with a button leaf spring.
The bayonet comes with an all-steel scabbard with a rounded tip and mounting dome. These scabbards were originally covered in leather with a steel locket and chape.
