Name/Title

Bayonet, Snider saw-back (Type 1)

About this object

A saw-back bayonet for British Snider artillery carbine and short rifles. It is a type 1 bayonet for bar on barrel. We have the rifle for this bayonet in our collection (RI.W2003.2106).

The bayonet has a straight fullered blade with spear point and 14 pairs of saw teeth along the top edge. The hilt is steel with knurled leather grips secured by four rivets, the locking spring is secured by a screw. We do not have the scabbard that would have originally sheathed this bayonet.

For more information regarding this bayonet and its use please refer to this excellent article on the New Zealand Arms Register (NZAR) website:

'NZAR ID No 44, Arm Type Bayonet' compiled by Phil Cregeen.
