Case, Match, New Zealand Express Co.

About this object

A merchandising match case for the New Zealand Express Company featuring its globe logo.

The New Zealand Express Co. was a cartage, importation and forwarding business, and a customs agent. The company was founded in Dunedin in 1867 and by 1920 it had 11 offices across New Zealand. Its main office stood on the corner of Manchester and Hereford Streets, Christchurch and when built in 1905/1906 it was New Zealand's tallest building.

By the mid-1930’s due largely to the Depression and stock market crash the company was broken up with regional offices being sold to independent owners. The new operators still called themselves NZ Express with their region in brackets.
