Fan, Cockade, Red cloth

About this object

A simple cockade folding hand fan made of red cloth. The clothbound guards are extended to form handles, which are tipped with bronze. One end has a small hole through which a tassel or ribbon was likely tied.

The outer edges of the leaf appear to have been painted gold on the outer side that would have once given the fan an opulent feel. There is also a small metal medallion in the centre of the front side, presumably there was a matching one on the other side and the pair formed an additional decorative element.

There is no acquisition documentation for this fan so it cannot be accurately dated, or provenance determined, but its style indicates it likely dates from the late 19th Century or early 20th Century.
