Fan, Folding, Chinese designAbout this object
A folding hand fan with a Chinese design featuring porcelain and silk figures on a painted background. The peoples' heads are made of tiny pieces of porcelain with faces intricately painted. The robes are silk of different colours, applied to the paper background.
It might depict a diplomatic, philosophical or educational scene in which the figures in the two buildings are addressing each other, in the presence of witnesses. The same scene is depicted on both sides.
The montures (sticks and guards) are wooden with black lacquer. The sticks are intricately detailed with a scene of three people sitting outside a building, surrounded by plants. The guards also show people and botanical motifs.
There is no acquisition paperwork for this fan so it cannot be accurately dated, or provenance determined, but its style indicates it could be from the late 19th or early 20th Century.
Noted in red collection register "Fan Collected in Italy 1942." Also noted that it is a "Late 19th Century Mandarin fan" although this hasn't been confirmed.Medium and Materials
