Self Portrait 2010

About this object

Bennett chose the medium of toast because it is an everyday item, not typically associated with art. The toasting and construction process allowed Bennett to present his unique perspective and to infuse each piece with emotion. To create such a work, he arranged precisely burnt pieces of white bread based on a photograph digitally processed to produce a pixellated outline. This piece is half the size of his usual work, each piece of bread individually cut into 200mm by 200mm squares. The self-portrait employs 2275 pieces.
