Arthur Carman PapersAbout this object
Arthur Herbert Carman (1902-1982) was a Wellington and Tawa-based sports historian and statistician. In 1935 he published the New Zealand Rugby Almanack and in 1948, together with Noel Macdonald, he began the New Zealand Cricket Almanack published by his own company, Sporting Publications. He took on sole responsibility for the Almanack in 1958 and edited and compiled it until 1982. Building on the pioneering work of TW Reese, Carman established himself as a hugely important figure in the development of cricket statistics and history, both in New Zealand and internationally. His cricketing publications include WN Carson: Footballer and Cricketer, Sporting Publications: Wellington 1947, New Zealand International Cricket, 1894-1974, Sporting Publications: Tawa 1974, and Wellington Cricket Centenary, 1875-1975, Sporting Publications: Tawa 1975.
The Collection held by the New Zealand Cricket Museum includes national and international correspondence to and from Carman, with regard to various cricket Almanacks and New Zealand cricket in general, as well as four boxes of scrapbooks etc covering domestic cricket and international cricket tours undertaken by New Zealand, together with details of tours to New Zealand by other countries. The boxes also include handwritten notes made by Carman on players and games.
