About this object

This watercolour of View of Dusky Bay from the hill above Cascade Cove is from one of three albums created by John Buchanan (1819-1898) held by the Otago Settlers Museum. The albums contain watercolour paintings, sketches (landscapes, botanical and zoological studies), photographs and clippings. John Buchanan emigrated to New Zealand in 1852. In 1857-8 he was a member of a Provincial Government survey team that explored inland Otago. On another expedition in 1863, as draughtsman for the Provincial Government’s Geological Department, he produced a number of watercolours of Fiordland and the area around Lake Wanaka. From 1865 until 1885 Buchanan undertook botanical field studies for the Colonial Museum in Wellington.
