Targe (Gaelic shield)
About this object
Scottish shield (targe) of wood and leather with large spike extending from centre. Wood and leather handle on the back. Inscribed "Comunn Ghaidhealach, N.Z. 1881 Far Am Faigheadh Coigreach Baigh". It is thought to commemorate the founding of the Gaelic Society of New Zealand in Dunedin in 1881. The targe was featured in the exhibition 'The Scots in New Zealand' at Te Papa Tongarewa, 2007-10.
