About this object

Since their humble beginnings in Wanganui in 1877, Whitlock’s sauces and chutneys have become an institution in many New Zealand homes. This family business, established by Fred Whitlock in 1877, was one of the oldest and longest running businesses in Wanganui. The factory was located in London Street and manufactured a wide range of cordials, sauces, pickles, chutneys and baking goods. These award winning jars were imported from Europe for the Whitlock’s display at the 1885 Industrial Exhibition in Wellington. Although acquired by Cerebos in 1992 and no longer family owned, the Whitlock’s brand is well known all over New Zealand and is recognised as a genuine kiwi icon.
