This is a WWI New Zealand Army Slouch hat belonging to Albert Sotham Garland who served in Egypt in the 8th (South Canterbury) Regiment for the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. Before his enlistment Mr Albert Sotham Garland was a farmer at Seaview, Waimate. He joined the NZ Expeditionary Force, 23rd Reinforcements of the Mounted Rifles as a trooper and embarked from Wellington for the Suez on the ship "Moeraki" on 19th April, 1917.

1914-1919Medium and Materials
The hat is made from light brown felt with triple stitching on the brim's edge. The hat band is made up of two colours - khaki/green/khaki - the colours of the Mounted Rifles. Inside the hat is a rectangle of green/white checked cotton cloth sewn on the hat band.
The hat also has metal eyelets and metal snaps.
