Matanaka Farm Buildings
Dating from the 1840s, these are the oldest surviving farm buildings in New Zealand. They include a stable, storehouse, granary, schoolhouse and privy, built for well-known whaler and trader Johnny Jones. He bought a whaling station in 1838, and when the supply of whales declined, established a farm at Matanaka in 1843 and became one of Dunedin's leading merchants.
Situated in a spectacular coastal yet still rural setting, Matanaka provides a very pleasant opportunity to experience an historic site. Two interpretative panels explain its history.
