Book, 'Comprehensive Reference Bible and Psalms'

About this object

Book; titled 'Comprehensive Reference Bible and Psalms', published by Nelson & Sons, London and Edinburgh, 1852. Bookplate - John Hobbs. The inscription reads: 'To Miss Waterhouse with the best wishes of Richard Hobbs, September 24/53, 24/09/53 / Clara Emma Gittos, Jan 8, 1874. Search the Scriptures'. There is a bookseller's stamp: 'J Walch & Son, Hobart Town'. Gold embossed maroon leather and gilt edged pages.

This bible presumably belonged to John Hobbs, who spearheaded the establishment of the mission station at Mangungu. Richard was John's son and went on to become a member of the House of Representatives. He also married Emma Waterhouse, the daughter of Rev. John Waterhouse. Clara Gittos is presumably a relative or descendant of Marianne (née Hobbs) and William Gittos who ran the Wesleyan mission at Waingohi, Kaipara, and later at Rangiora on the Otamatea River.
