Tools, in Hessian Wrap

About this object

The main item in this set of woodworking tools is the Stanley 45 Combination plane. A combination plane is one that can be fitted with different irons, or cutters, as Stanley called them, and be adjusted for a particular cut. The #45 could groove, rabbet, dado, match (tongue and groove), bead (edge and centre), slit, and cut sash. With the special bottoms and cutters, which were purchased separately from the basic model, the plane could also do simple mouldings, nosing, reeding, and fluting. We are not sure what all the additional blades were for, but the fact that the owner created this simple hand sewn container for them must have meant that were all useful and needed to be kept ready for use.

The floral design engraved onto the body of the plane dates this to 1895-1910.
