Proof Press, Wyndham FarmerAbout this object
This is a proof press which we believe was used to produce the Wyndham Farmer. A proof press was used to create copies of newspapers, manuscripts etc for the purpose of editing before the final copy went to print hence the term proof. The proof copy was distributed to editors, authors etc and edits were written onto it. The proof was then returned to the compositor who made the adjustments and then printed the final copy on a printing press.
The Wyndham Farmer newspaper was founded in 1895, by Mr Alfred Dolamore, of Gore, and was taken over by Mr E. G. Macpherson in 1898. His son Doug Macpherson took over the business, and ceased printing the Farmer in the 1955 due to staffing issues
