About this object

This Bible was presented to Wyndham Presbyterian Church on 1st March 1885 by Wm R. J. Fraser. Information with this Bible states that it was used as the Pulpit Bible at Mimihau when the Rev. James Henry took services there. At that time services were conducted monthly at the Mimihau School.

Rev James Henry M.A., a Scotsman, was Wyndham's first Minister, being inducted in 1874. His parish covered the wide area of the Lower Mataura Valley, and he was known as 'a pioneer of lion-hearted courage'.

William Fraser who presented the Bible has been described as 'an urbane gentleman, son of Invercargill's first police officer'. He came to Wyndham in 1881 and managed the Wyndham branch of the Bank of New Zealand for 23 years. He had interests in the I.O.O.F. Alma Lodge, the Horticultural Society and the Wyndham Rifle Club.'

Wyndham Presbyterian Church was built and first opened on the 1st March 1885. The wooden building with a steeple, stood on the site of the present Sunday School Hall.
