The Wyndham Farmer, 1960s EditionsAbout this object
These copies of The Wyndham Farmer newspaper were all published from 1962-1969. The Museum also holds various bound copies from 1962-1969, as well as copies of the first and final editions.
First published in 1895, The Wyndham Farmer was taken over by Ewen Macpherson in 1989. Ewen then printed and published the paper for 39 years, and when he died in 1934 his son Doug took over the business. Doug ran the paper for 20 years, with the last issue coming out on 19 February 1955. Said to be the last hand-composited paper in New Zealand. Doug closed during a prosperous period purely because he could not get any staff. For the last six weeks of publication Doug had put out the issues entirely on his own and it was said that as Doug was finishing compositing the last page of the last paper, a man who wished to become a subscriber telephoned.
The Wyndham News Flash was subsequently published by Les Necklen, but when Neville Greenfield took over his business in 1962 he reintroduced The Wyndham Farmer, publishing until 1974.
