Portrait, Framed Helen Burley McKayAbout this object
This is a framed hand coloured photographic portrait of Helen Burley McKay. Born in Scotland in 1842, newly married, Helen arrived in New Zealand with her husband Robert Malcolm McKay in 1877. Robert had already spent some time in New Zealand and returned to Scotland to 'collect his wife'.
The couple had four children, Isabella Jane known locally as Aunt Bella, Williamina Mary who died aged 2-years, Annie Roberta who died aged 5-months and William Osbourne Closs known as Ossie.
Helen loved flowers and was a skilled grower. As such, she was a founding member of the Wyndham Horticultural Society. A dedicated member of the Presbyterian Church, Helen worked tirelessly for the patriotic effort during World War One.
Helen died in 1920 aged 78-years, after a long year of failing health. Upon her death she was remembered as an honourable member of the Wyndham community. Helen is buried in the Wyndham Cemetery with her husband Robert, who died 5-years after her.
